Discovery ClimbSquare ICN – 디스커버리클라임스퀘어

What do you do when the weather forecast is questionable or it is definitely too cold for lead climbing outside, but you’re still desperate to climb? Well, it’s time to venture west of Seoul to Discovery Climb Square! This is the one of the only indoor lead climbing gyms near Seoul. It draws climbers of all types and has an expansive facility.

This climbing gym includes dedicated lead climbing walls with varying wall angles and permanent quickdraws on the routes. There is also a top rope wall that also are available to lead climb. The route grades are set between 5.8 to 5.13b with walls about 15m tall. At the top of each route are paper-clip type hook anchors for lead climbers. The nice thing is there are easier and harder grades set at all the different sections of wall.

Along with the sport climbing sections, there is a decent sized bouldering cave. Here they have graded their boulder problems using 9 colors from easiest to hardest. In this area you also have access to many types of hangboards, as well as a Kilter Board, Tension Board, and Moon Board. You won’t be able to adjust the angle of these boards as the gym sets them each week, but they are still fun to work on different types of problems.

Above the bouldering section is an autobelay area, with 10m high walls aimed at beginner climbers and children. These auto belay walls have routes from 5.6 to 5.10a, working to build up confidence in the climber. Interspersed with the autobelays are also top rope climbs that go up to a 5.10c grade. These top ropes don’t require your belayer to be wearing a harness, as they are bolted to the floor. The ATC devices are already pre-loaded correctly which might be helpful for parents or partners who aren’t climbers themselves.

Finally, Discovery Climb Square has multiple training rooms with endurance routes set. There is one room on the first floor in the sport climbing area and two others on the second floor. This place really has all the amenities you could want in rock climbing gym. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first time rope climbing or if you are training for a competition, this gym has something for everyone.

Discovery Climb Square is located west of Seoul in the Incheon area. It is directly outside Majeon Station on the Incheon 2 subway line. There is free parking in the building on B1 and many convenience stores and restaurants in the vicinity. The gym is located on the 5th floor of the Yeongnam Topsville Wellbeing Center building.

After taking the elevator to the 5th floor, you will need to fill out a waiver form with your details before you climb: Name, birthdate, phone number, climbing level, address, along with agreeing to the terms and conditions. If it is not your first time coming, you can fill out a small repeat visit slip where you write your name and phone number only. A day pass costs 20,000 won for an adult, 17,000 won for a teenager, and 15,000 for a child. There are also various passes, including a 10 punch pass valid for 6 months and monthly memberships. If you need to take a belay test you will need to pay an additional 3,000 won and schedule a time with the front desk. You can choose to take either a lead or top-rope belay test, and will receive a tag to put somewhere on your harness once you have passed it. If you take the lead test and pass the staff assume you can also top-rope belay, so no need to take both tests. If you ever lose your tag you can pay another 1,000 won to replace it.

There are locker rooms with showers available, toilets in a separate location, a social meeting area with tables and chairs, along with a small kitchen to heat food in the microwave if needed. Near the tables is a small play room for children with different toys and structures to climb on as well as a stretching room with foam rollers and mats. A decent sized climbing equipment shop is also in this gym, mainly selling climbing shoes, harnesses, and rope. There are some miscellaneous gear items for climbers who plan to go outside, including carabiners and personal anchors, as well as different climbing clothes and accessories. If you have a membership you receive a discount on these items as well.

Gear to bring: your own rope (40m minimum), harness, shoes, belay device, and belay gloves. (you can rent all this gear for a price if you need)
