Located in the suburbs of Pangyo is a fantastic lead climbing wall available to climbers – for free! It is situated in between two churches and is a bit hidden from the main street. The wall is maintained by Seongnam City and there is an employee who watches to ensure everyone is climbing and belaying properly.
This climbing arch has more than 25 routes available to lead climb from 5.6 to 5.12a. There are no top ropes or auto-belays, so you will need to have people who can lead climb and lead belay to put ropes up. A fingerboard is installed on one part of the wall for warming up or training. All the quickdraws are permanently fixed to the wall and changed periodically throughout the year. The anchors are paperclip-type hooks that are securely bolted at the top. The routes are reset about once or twice a year – usually all done at the same time. This means they will often close the wall for a few days in order to do that.
You need to be aware that this location is completely outdoors and subject to weather – so be sure to check the forecast first! The wall is equipped with lights for nighttime climbing when the weather is nice and there are bathrooms right outside the climbing area maintained by the city. Inside the fence are changing rooms for men and women, which is lovely when coming straight from work. There are also some plastic chairs available to use, but I often sit on the ground on a mat or blanket that I bring.
You can eat and drink inside the lead climbing area, just be mindful to pack your trash out as there are no trash cans for the public. Because it is in a more suburban location of Pangyo, there are not many convenience stores nearby – so be sure to bring enough snacks and water to get you through your climbing session!
You will need to fill out a waiver form including your details before you climb: Name, birthdate, phone number, climbing level, address, and time you arrived. If it is your first time there the employee may watch you closely as you climb and belay, just to ensure you know what you are doing.
Gear to bring: your own rope (40m minimum), harness, shoes, belay device, and belay gloves. You can rent some gear from the office/employee there for a small fee.
