This sport climbing crag is one of the most popular locations close to Seoul. Hidden Wall is one of many climbing spots on Samseong Mountain in Anyang. It consists of 3 different walls, but the main wall is definitely the busiest. It is nearby to public transportation, and the approach is one of the easier ones on the mountain.
The crag is mainly granite slab climbing, with 24 routes spread across 3 walls. The grades go from 5.9 to 11a, but don’t be fooled – the routes can be difficult for what is listed. A few of the routes include overhangs or small roofs in addition to the slabs. Most of the climbs on the Main Wall are about 25m tall, while the Right and Left Walls are both around 10m tall. There are bolts and anchors with chains and mussy hooks for lowering on every route. There is one 5.10a multi-pitch with 4 pitches, each one bolted and anchored as you go along the route. You can find more details about the routes and walls in the Sport Climbing in Anyang guidebook.
The crag is located nearest to Gwanak Station (관악역) and by the entrance of the Gyeonggi National University of Education. If you are only taking subways and buses, then you would take the bus to the University entrance. Start walking up the hill, through the parking toll gate past where the bus stop is. Keep walking for 20-30 minutes until you reach the top parking lot and second guard gate barrier. If you are driving or taking a taxi, ask them to take you to the top of the parking lot. Go past this second guard barrier to the small yellow wall on the left side near a telephone pole that has a path leading down on the other side. Step over the wall and follow the path down and across the small stream, then up the other side. Continue on the trail for about 5 minutes where you will then cross a dry river bed with large boulders. Once you get to the other side, turn right up the main path and walk for about 20-30 minutes. You will see rocks painted that say “암벽” and arrows pointing left up a hill. There will be other rocks earlier on the path that are painted or scrubbed away, but wait for the ones that have the specific Korean words on it. Follow the small path left up the steep hill for about 5 more minutes where you will then reach the Main Wall of the crag. Just around the left side of the Main Wall you will then see the 6 routes of the Left Wall. If you continue right from the Main Wall, up the hill another 5 minutes or so you will then find the 5 routes of the Right Wall.
There are many areas for groups to set up a blanket or chairs for a nice base camp while you climb. Hidden Wall’s main area gets sun starting in the late morning through the afternoon, so in the summer the rock can be burning hot. A note of warning – because it is so popular, on good weather days often there will be people climbing on every single route and leaving top ropes up for the different climbing groups. If a group isn’t using their gear that is left on the wall, don’t be afraid to ask if you can use it, or if they could take it down.
Gear to Bring: 60m rope, 12 quickdraws, harness, shoes, belay device, and helmet.
